Dental Fillings & Tooth Repair in Sydney

Fillings replace tooth structure lost through decay or damage. An assessment checks the extent of the damage, any cracks and the health of the pulp before comparing a direct filling, an inlay or a crown.

Three things to assess before a filling

How deep is the decay?

The visible hole may not show the full extent of damage. An examination and imaging, when needed, help establish how close decay is to the pulp.

Which material is suitable?

Tooth-coloured composite is one common option. Choice also depends on biting forces, tooth position, the size of the defect and keeping the treatment area dry.

How much tooth remains?

A large defect may need more support than a filling alone can provide. Your dentist will explain other restorations and how healthy tooth structure can be preserved.

Your dental fillings visit

  1. Examination and treatment plan

Describe pain, sensitivity or food trapping. Discuss the repair needed and whether local anaesthetic is appropriate.

  2. Preparing and restoring the tooth

The affected structure is treated and a suitable material placed to rebuild the tooth shape and contact areas.

  3. Checking the bite and follow-up

We check how the tooth bites together and explain care while anaesthesia wears off and after the restoration.

Understand the costs first

Fees depend on the tooth, the number of surfaces involved, the material and the extent of damage. If root canal treatment or a crown is needed, these are separate procedures with different costs.

Frequently asked questions

Explore common questions, then discuss what is suitable for you at an individual assessment.

Does painless decay need a filling?

Lack of pain does not mean decay is not progressing. Your dentist assesses its depth and whether a cavity has formed.

Can a filled tooth decay again?

Yes. The edges of a restoration still need brushing, cleaning between teeth and regular checks.

Is a filling or a crown better?

It depends on remaining tooth structure, cracks and biting forces. There is no single choice for every tooth.

How long does recovery take?

Treatment and settling time vary with the repair. Ask about appointment length and follow your individual advice about eating afterwards.
