A diagnosis comes before a snoring appliance

Snoring has different causes

Some people snore without obstructive sleep apnoea; others have both. The loudness of snoring alone cannot establish severity.

Medical and dental care together

A doctor assesses whether a sleep study is needed. A dental assessment then considers teeth, gums and the jaw for appliance suitability.

The role of an oral appliance

A custom appliance may help maintain the airway for some patients. It is not suitable for everyone and must not independently replace prescribed treatment.

Frequently asked questions

Explore common questions, then discuss what is suitable for you at an individual assessment.

Can a sports mouthguard treat snoring?

It serves a different purpose. Snoring and sleep-breathing concerns need assessment, not self-treatment with a standard mouthguard.

Can this dental service diagnose sleep apnoea?

This service focuses on dental appliance assessment. Diagnosis and severity require appropriate medical assessment, which may include a sleep study.

Is an oral appliance guaranteed to work?

No. Effectiveness depends on the condition, adaptation and use, and must be checked at follow-up.

Can I replace my CPAP with an appliance?

Discuss this with your sleep physician first. Do not stop CPAP yourself. Dental options should be assessed within your medical treatment plan.
